Marina had investigated Stromboli as a place to go on the internet, and had seen a recent entry from an American family cruising Italy on a catamaran. She contacted them by email and low and behold they had kids and were staying at Stella Del Dud – what a deal. So, we altered our plans a little bit and decided to stay a few extra days at Stella Del Sud and hang out with the Pimontels. Rodney, Jane, RJ and Leo saw us on the dock – Canadian Flag and all … we met up, invited them for cocktails on their boat, and then decided to go to have Pizza in town. We had a great time, talked at length about our experiences, the kids were in heaven … and so we basically did the same a couple of nights in a row. I was working during the day but could partake of the fun in the evenings. It is nice for us to meet new friends, but the kids are so rejuvenated when they meet some other kids that it makes them giddy with fun.
The people at Stella Del Sud were very nice, the marina was safe and while it is a bit industrial, it was a great town.
Alas, all good things must come to an end …. So the Pimentals headed south and we headed north. Their plan was to head up the Italian coast to Otranto where it’s only 60 miles from Gouvia on Corfu. While the weather was a little unsettled for us, it was downright nasty on the east coast of Italy. While we were sitting at the dock with 20-25 knot winds, they were sitting through 35-45 knot winds. Last position report I saw they were still a long ways away from the jumping off point to Greece and the wind was still really strong and not abating at all. Total bummer.
